Zur selben Zeit wie Lawrence of Arabia zieht sie ruhelos durch Nordafrika, unter dem Decknamen Si Mahmoud und in M\u00e4nnerkleidung. Sie lebt mit und unter den Beduinen, schreibt, immer auf der Flucht vor den Beh\u00f6rden, Romane, Erz\u00e4hlungen und Reiseberichte. \u2013 Ihr Tod mit nur 27 Jahren ist so r\u00e4tselhaft wie ihr Leben: Sie ertrank, mitten in der Sahara. Doch wie alles bei ihr, ist auch das umstritten: war es wirklich ein Unfall? Oder Mord? Selbstmord? Oder ein Weg, um unter anderer Identit\u00e4t neu anzufangen? At the end of the 19th century and only 20 years old she arrives in Algeria. From this moment onwards she falls hopelessly for the Maghreb, the Sahara and the Arab way of life. At the same time of Lawrence of Arabia and under the pseudonym of Si Mahmoud, dressed in men\u2019s clothing, she treks restlessly through North Africa. Living with and as one of the Bedouins, always on the run from the authorities she writes novels, tales, and travel reports. \u2013 Her death at the age of just 27 is as mysterious as was her life: she drowned in the middle of the Sahara desert. Just like everything about her, death is also wrapped in controversy: was it really an accident? Or murder? Suicide? Or just a way to start living under a different identity?
